Criminal cases begin in a magistrates’ court. The most serious cases are sent to the Crown Court; other cases may remain with magistrates. A listing shows that a hearing is scheduled, not that an allegation has been proved.

Hearing lists can change at short notice and some proceedings are restricted. Confirm details with the court before travelling, follow reporting restrictions and never infer guilt from a charge, listing or court appearance.

Common questions

Where does a criminal case start?

Criminal cases start in a magistrates’ court. The most serious offences are passed to the Crown Court, while many cases are completed by magistrates.

Does a court listing mean someone is guilty?

No. A listing records a scheduled hearing. A charge is an accusation and the prosecution must prove the case; guilt is established only by a guilty plea or a court finding.

Are London court hearing lists always final?

No. Listings and timings can change, and some cases or details are restricted. Check the official service or contact the court before travelling.
