Barnet Council appoints Grenfell‑linked director, residents fear safety

Barnet Group announced on 29 July 2026 that Laura Johnson has been confirmed as permanent director of development and property, a senior post that oversees the borough’s 13,000 council homes. The council said the appointment followed a competitive recruitment process and that Johnson was the strongest candidate.

Why the appointment draws criticism

During her previous role at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Johnson was responsible for decisions on the Grenfell Tower refurbishment. The Grenfell inquiry concluded she pushed for a cheaper contractor, which resulted in the use of combustible plastic‑filled panels instead of metal cladding. The inquiry also noted she delayed fitting self‑closing fire‑door mechanisms despite fire brigade warnings.

Grenfell United, representing survivors and bereaved families, has urged Barnet Council to reverse the decision. The group said the hire shows a “staggering disregard for the inquiry’s findings” and that no one implicated in the Grenfell inquiry should hold senior housing positions while criminal investigations continue.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it is pursuing charges against 57 individuals and 20 companies linked to the Grenfell fire. The Crown Prosecution Service is expected to decide on charges by June 2027, the fire’s tenth anniversary.

Barnet Group responded that it will not comment on staff matters from previous employment but reiterated that resident safety remains its priority. The council has not indicated any immediate change to the appointment.
