CCTV to tackle illegal parking outside Enfield schools
Enforcement firm PCM will install cameras on Hunters Way to address dangerous parent parking.
Incident → evidence → outcomeCCTV cameras are to be installed outside two Enfield schools to combat illegal parking by parents. The enforcement firm Parking Control Management (PCM) announced the measure following observations by the Enfield Dispatch of widespread dangerous parking on Hunters Way, the road between One Degree Academy and Wren Academy.
The Dispatch witnessed scores of vehicles parked on double-yellow lines and pavements during school pick-up times on Friday, 2nd. At one point, up to 30 vehicles were observed parked illegally along a single stretch of the road. This created a narrow passage for pupils, forcing them to squeeze between cars and along pavements, reducing their visibility of oncoming traffic before crossing. No enforcement was apparent during the observation period.
Responsibility for Enforcement
The roads where the schools are situated have not yet been adopted by Enfield Council. Consequently, responsibility for enforcement lies with Trinity Estates, the property firm that manages the land, and its contractor PCM. Residents have expressed alarm over the safety implications of the parking, describing the situation as chaotic and dangerous for children.
A spokesperson for PCM acknowledged the concerns regarding parking behaviour during busy periods. They stated that while patrol officers have been monitoring the area, school-run parking presents unique challenges due to the volume of vehicles. The installation of CCTV, planned for the following week, is intended to provide more consistent enforcement throughout the day.
The spokesperson added that drivers breaching restrictions will receive parking charge notices. PCM is also working with the schools to remind parents and visitors of the restrictions before the cameras become operational. One Degree Academy reportedly communicates regularly with parents about safe road use. PCM aims to ensure safe and unobstructed access for all users of the area.
However, some local residents have voiced skepticism about the effectiveness of current enforcement efforts. They described the issue as a daily safety problem involving unsafe driving and obstructive parking, highlighting a perceived lack of accountability among the involved organisations. Both schools and Enfield Council were approached for comment but did not respond, according to the Dispatch.
