Colindale arts group launches zine project for local stories

The Colindale North Creatives Community, established last year to foster local creativity, is now seeking submissions for a new zine titled 'Rooted & Arriving'. The project aims to capture and celebrate the diverse experiences of belonging in the Colindale area.

Joan Roselie, a founding member of the group, told the Barnet Post that Colindale has long suffered from negative stereotypes. She initiated 'Art in the Park' last year as a way to counter these perceptions, providing a space for free creative expression. The initiative, initially held outdoors, has since expanded to indoor sessions funded by the Community Infrastructure Levy.

Expanding Creative Opportunities

The group's activities have grown from small beginnings, now acting as a cultural hub for Colindale. Their 'Art in the Park' exhibition in July attracted 90 attendees, with regular creative sessions engaging participants aged from 7 to 70. The sessions offer a creative outlet and a sense of community for various age groups, from young children to older residents.

The Colindale North Creatives Community has also partnered with organisations such as Cultivate Colindale and received support from local councillors and Middlesex University. Participants have reported benefits including increased confidence to pursue artistic paths and a sense of purpose away from influences like artificial intelligence.

Submissions for 'Rooted & Arriving' Zine

The 'Rooted & Arriving' zine project is funded by an Esmée Fairbairn foundation grant administered through Artsdepot and facilitated by artist Nyree Meason. It intends to reflect the experiences of individuals who are both long-term residents and newcomers to Colindale.

The project encourages submissions in any creative form that represents a personal story. Submission sessions will take place on September 27th, October 4th, and October 11th, each running from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm. The group aims to assist individuals who may be unsure how to begin sharing their narratives.
