Dead animals found in Brentford canal network

Dead animals, including foxes, ducks, and a cat, were discovered in the Brentford canal network over the summer. The pollution has caused distress to children using the waterways, according to a local watersports charity. Concerns have been raised about sewage entering the canal, particularly in the Brentford Lock basin where the Grand Union Canal meets the River Thames.

Impact on canal users

Paul Keane, general manager of Brentford Community Boathouse, told the Brentford and Syon Area Forum that the problem was exacerbated by the summer heat. He noted that the stagnant water meant the dead animals remained in the same spot. Kelly Everden, an events officer at the boathouse, stated that children using the canal were particularly upset by the discoveries, especially when a pet cat was found among the deceased animals. Keane added that the water quality is not always hygienic, highlighting the need for a comprehensive strategy.

Causes of pollution

Misconnections, where plumbing from housing is incorrectly linked to surface water drains instead of sewers, are cited as a significant cause of untreated waste entering the waterways. Keane suggested that while some issues are historic, contemporary misdirection of sewage into storm drains is also a factor. He indicated that this was not the fault of Hounslow Council but required attention to support increased canal usage, especially for children. The dead animals were predominantly found to have E. coli and botulism, conditions that thrive in warm, still water with low oxygen levels. The most stagnant stretch was noted around Boston Manor Park.

Official responses

Hounslow Council confirmed that officers are examining misconnections through a River Brent catchment group. Councillor Dan Bowring encouraged residents to contact their ward councillors regarding the issue. Thames Water acknowledged known problems with misconnections in the area and is collaborating on solutions, although it is not responsible for third-party drainage. The Canal and River Trust stated its aim to remove dead animals promptly, noting that weed clearance boats had been out of action. The Environment Agency is investigating pollution reports and has pointed to drought conditions affecting river health.
