Incident → evidence → outcomePanayiotis Sinnos, a 63-year-old from Ealing, has been recognised for his extensive fundraising efforts for Prostate Cancer UK. He has raised over £72,000 for the charity by participating in numerous running events, including six London Marathons. Sinnos has been nominated as a finalist in the 'Outstanding Commitment' category by JustGiving.
Running as a response to diagnosis
Sinnos was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018. He began running in 2021, using the activity as a way to cope with his treatment. Since 2022, his fundraising has accumulated £72,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, with plans to reach £90,000. He has also run multiple half marathons in locations such as Kew Gardens and Hackney this year, alongside his marathon efforts.
He told MyLondon that the diagnosis was not a complete surprise, stating, 'I kind of knew something was up.' Sinnos highlighted the importance of early detection, noting that 'one in eight men will be affected by prostate cancer,' and 'one in four Black men will be diagnosed with it.' He added that running has been instrumental in his journey, providing a significant boost and helping him to 'keep going'.
Facing a potential recurrence
Despite being told in December that his cancer may have returned, and doctors being 'convinced' it has come back, Sinnos has continued his running and fundraising activities. He admitted to feeling down at the start of the year due to the news but resolved to face any challenges. 'Whatever happens, we can deal with this,' he stated. 'Whatever's thrown at me, we'll deal with it again.'
Sinnos has drawn inspiration from others, including a friend with incurable prostate cancer and Kevin Webber, who has lived with terminal prostate cancer for over a decade and continues to run marathons. Sinnos believes that movement is key to well-being, regardless of age, and has continued to run even when experiencing fatigue from medication.
Future fundraising goals
Sinnos is currently fundraising for the London Marathon 2027. He stated that his aim is to turn his experience into something positive by raising awareness and encouraging men to get checked early. He believes that 'every vote helps shine an even bigger light on prostate cancer awareness and the importance of early diagnosis.'
