Demonstrations mark October 7 anniversary
The arrests occurred on the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks. Around 100 pro-Palestine protesters marched in London, chanting slogans such as “free free Palestine”. A group at the rear of this march held a banner referencing “Holocaust survivor descendants against Gaza genocide”. Counter-protesters gathered near Russell Square, holding Israeli flags and placards. Shouts were exchanged between the groups.
Student pro-Palestine demonstrations had been planned at various universities, prompting calls for them to be banned or postponed. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting described the planned demonstrations as “shameful”, and Education Secretary Lucy Powell urged students to “show compassion and protest on another day”. Universities UK advised university leaders to review security and maintain contact with Jewish student groups.
Rise in antisemitic incidents
Data from the Community Security Trust (CST) indicated a rise in antisemitic incidents. The CST recorded 1,926 antisemitic incidents across the UK in the period from January to June 2026. This represented a fifth more incidents than the first half of the previous year and was the second-highest total for the first six months of any year recorded by the CST. The highest total, 2,019 incidents, was recorded in the first half of 2024, following the 2023 Hamas attacks and the subsequent war in Gaza.
The Prime Minister described a rise in antisemitic behaviour in the UK since 2023 as “disturbing”. The Israeli embassy in London stated that Britain had “experienced a profound rise in antisemitism, with Jewish people facing intimidation and hatred in streets, universities and online” in the three years since the Hamas attacks.
According to Gaza's health ministry, the Palestinian death toll over the past three years surpassed 74,000 last month.
