Hackney arson suspect charged as Stourbridge families return home

A 50-year-old man from Hackney has been charged with arson after multiple small fires were reported in London Fields early on 27 July. Isaac Shozi, of Bodney Road, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 29 July 2024. The London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police responded to the incidents near Lansdowne Drive shortly after 5am.

Stourbridge residents return as cordons lifted

In Stourbridge, West Midlands, 85 households evacuated during wildfires have been allowed to return home after West Midlands Fire Service lifted cordons on 28 July. The service confirmed the properties were unaffected by the blazes. A further 13 households with partially damaged homes have also been permitted to remain in their properties, Dudley Borough Council chief executive Balvinder Heran said in a briefing.

Heran urged residents not to speculate on the cause of the fires while investigations continue. Eight families whose homes were destroyed have been granted access to view their properties. The council has not yet released details on temporary accommodation arrangements for those displaced.

Military support deployed to West Midlands

Around 200 military personnel were deployed to the West Midlands on 27 July to assist with firefighting efforts. The Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment, supported by the 22 Engineer Regiment, provided logistical support to free up firefighters for frontline operations. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service also reported significant wildfire activity, with 14 ongoing incidents in the region.

Fundraising underway for affected families

More than £125,000 has been raised through GoFundMe appeals for families affected by wildfires in Stourbridge, Birmingham, Pershore and Stoke-on-Trent. The funds will support those who lost homes or belongings in the blazes. The Met Office forecast cooler temperatures and rain for parts of England and Wales in the coming days, which may reduce further fire risks.

Isaac Shozi will appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 29 July 2024. Investigations into the cause of the Stourbridge wildfires continue, with Dudley Borough Council expected to provide further updates. Residents in affected areas are advised to follow West Midlands Fire Service guidance on safety precautions as fire risks remain elevated.
