Highgate School pupil, 16, dies in North Road collision

A 16-year-old Highgate School pupil died on North Road in Highgate on September 24. The collision occurred shortly after 8.13am, and the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. Floral tributes identified the pupil as Melissa. Highgate School described the loss as "deeply heartbreaking" and stated the Year 12 student would be greatly missed.

Following the incident, police arrested a 68-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. An investigation into the circumstances of the collision has been launched.

School lockdowns in September

September saw multiple security incidents affecting schools across London. On September 16, Menorah Grammar School in Edgware was temporarily locked down. This action was taken after reports of a man seen walking along Edgwarebury Lane carrying what appeared to be a rifle. Staff and pupils were instructed to remain inside classrooms while police responded to the emergency protocols activated by multiple public reports. Officers later determined the item carried by the man was an imitation firearm.

Earlier in the month, on September 10, several schools across Islington and neighbouring boroughs initiated lockdown procedures. This was in response to a "malicious" email received by the institutions. Schools increased security measures and controlled building access throughout the day. Among the schools reported to have taken precautionary action were Canonbury Primary School, Sacred Heart, William Tyndale School, Thornhill Primary School, St Joan of Arc, Drayton Park Primary School, and Christ the King Primary School, though it was understood many more were affected.

Islington Council stated that following police investigations into the email incident, no information was found to suggest a credible threat to any specific school or individual. The council reassured parents that pupil and staff safety remained the top priority.
