London Marathon expands to two-day event in 2027

The London Marathon will expand to a two-day event in April 2027, involving 100,000 participants over consecutive days. The expanded event will run from Greenwich to Westminster. This one-off change for 2027 aims to create the largest fundraising moment in UK sporting history.

Calls for clarity on disruption

Lord Duval, who represents Greenwich and Lewisham on the London Assembly, has called for organisers to provide more information about arrangements to minimise disruption. He highlighted that two days of closures will significantly impact communities in Greenwich, Charlton, Woolwich, and Deptford. Lord Duval also raised questions about how essential services, such as healthcare packages for elderly and less able residents, will be maintained.

He stated, "People need clear and early information about how they will be affected." Lord Duval has asked the London Marathon organisers, via GLA officials, for details on how they will communicate with residents, protect access for essential journeys, support local businesses, and minimise transport disruption.

Business concerns

Simi Ghent, owner of Simi's Italian Deli in Charlton Village, expressed worries about the impact on her business. She noted that the single-day marathon already affects trade, with customers drawn away from the village. Having the event on both a Saturday and Sunday could lead to significant loss of trade, as her busiest day is Saturday. Ms Ghent stated, "We don't know how the local council will support us. It has the potential to work well for us, if we were to have the right support - but we don't have any clarity yet."

She added that while she can walk to her business as she lives nearby, others may not be able to access the village.

Organisers and council response

The Mayor of London stated that GLA officers are working with London Marathon Events and borough partners to ensure the two-day format is carefully planned and communicated. Mitigations include early engagement with residents and businesses, coordinated road closure plans, and maintaining access for emergency services.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, confirmed that organisers are working closely with boroughs along the route to minimise disruption. He said they are identifying and understanding residents' needs in advance, including access requirements for carers, medical appointments, and other essential journeys. Mr Brasher anticipates the event will generate more than £150 million for charities and good causes.

A spokesperson for Greenwich Council said they are collaborating with London Marathon Events and the GLA to ensure appropriate mitigations are in place. They expect road closures to open at the end of each day, similar to the traditional one-day marathon, to reduce disruption. The council anticipates the two-day event will bring double the atmosphere and attract thousands more people to the borough, further boosting the local economy.
