London sets CPR world record with 434 participants

A new Guinness World Record has been established in the City of London for the most people performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a single hour. The record was set on 29 July 2024.

The record attempt saw 434 participants simultaneously engage in the life-saving technique for more than 60 minutes. This event was a key part of the Central London Alliance’s Saving Lives campaign. The initiative seeks to boost public understanding of CPR and provide individuals with the confidence and ability to save lives.

Tony Matharu, founder and Chairman of the Central London Alliance, stated that breaking the world record was a significant achievement. He emphasised the importance of the number of people who gained CPR skills through the experience, including those certified through online training and participants in the 36-hour CPR relay. Mr Matharu said the aim was to bring people together and equip them with the valuable ability to save lives.

David Johnston, Chief Executive of The Lord Mayor’s Appeal, described the record attempt as a prime example of community collaboration. Caitlin Hyem, an Official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, noted the participants' satisfaction not only in contributing to a world record but also in acquiring a skill that could potentially save a life.

The record-setting event took place at Tower Suites, a property managed by Blue Orchid Hospitality, which served as a lead sponsor. The initiative was part of a larger, 36-hour CPR relay organised by the Central London Alliance.
