Southwark Council's night time patrol service has been extended for another year, with operations set to continue until August 2027. The decision follows a successful pilot scheme and comes with an additional £600,000 in funding allocated by the council.

Service Achievements and Operations

The Night Time Uniformed Patrol Service (NTUPS) operates between 6pm and 2am, a period identified as having higher likelihoods of crime and anti-social behaviour. The service deploys up to 10 uniformed officers who are assigned to different areas based on crime data, intelligence, and community concerns. During its pilot phase, the patrol responded to approximately 70 reports concerning violence against women and girls. Additionally, the service made 52 referrals to homeless support services, as reported by MyLondon.

Councillor David Watson, Executive Member for Community Safety and Engagement at Southwark Council, highlighted the service's effectiveness in supporting rough sleepers and directing them to appropriate facilities. He also noted the recovery of weapons and interventions in life-threatening situations. The patrols are designed to tackle and deter anti-social behaviour, promote women's safety, reduce drug-related harm, and create safer neighbourhoods.

The uniformed officers receive specialised training, including accredited qualifications, to equip them for high-intensity incidents. The council stated that the patrols have become a recognised presence, working closely with council teams, businesses, and the police. The reception from local residents, tenants associations, and businesses has been positive, with many welcoming the visible deterrent and the rapport being built.

Reporting Anti-Social Behaviour

Southwark residents who wish to report anti-social behaviour can do so through the council's website. Alternatively, they can contact the council directly by calling 020 7525 5777.

The extended service aims to further strengthen prevention and enforcement efforts across the borough, building on the foundations established during the initial pilot period.
