Callie Khouri, the screenwriter behind the acclaimed 1991 film Thelma & Louise, has stated her hope that a new stage musical adaptation will draw attention to the persistent issue of violence against women. The production, for which Khouri wrote the book, is currently being performed at the Young Vic theatre in London.

The musical is scheduled to run until October 24. Amy Lennox stars as Thelma Dickinson and Rachel Tucker takes on the role of Louise Sawyer, the characters made famous by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in the original film.

Concerns over persistent violence

Khouri, speaking to the Press Association, indicated that she holds little expectation for the musical to directly alter societal statistics. However, she expressed a strong desire for it to "illuminate" the problem of violence against women, a subject she believes requires continued public consideration and a collective effort towards change.

She voiced scepticism about substantial improvements in the rates of violence against women in the 35 years since the film's debut. "I don’t see that really happening so far, and I don’t think that the numbers have gotten remarkably better," Khouri told the Press Association. She added that the world needs to acknowledge the alarming frequency with which women experience violence and recognise its unacceptability.

Khouri expanded on her views, stating that violence affects all of humanity, not just specific groups, and that the prevalence of violence is perplexing. She suggested a broader societal issue regarding the valuation of life and a need for greater respect for humanity.

From film to stage

The stage production is an adaptation of the narrative that follows two women on a road trip, encountering significant trouble including robbery and an act of self-defence resulting in a fatality. The film famously concludes with a police chase and the protagonists driving off a cliff.

Initially, Khouri harboured reservations about adapting the film into a musical. She described the experience of reconceiving the work as a musical as "incredibly rewarding" and a significant learning process. She highlighted her positive collaboration with the musical's composer and lyricist, Neko Case, and director Trip Cullman.

Khouri admitted that the success of the adaptation surprised her. "I was sceptical when I first was approached about it, but it does seem like it has kind of found its groove," she said, as reported by the Press Association.

Tickets for Thelma & Louise are available for purchase via the Young Vic theatre's official website.
