Rapper Tinie Tempah is releasing his fourth album, titled 'The Night's Not Dead', with the stated aim of revitalising the UK's club scene. The new record, his first since 2017's 'Youth', is structured to mirror a complete night out, beginning at dusk and concluding at dawn.

Tempah views the current decline in club attendance as a critical issue, particularly for emerging artists and those working within underground music genres. He expressed concern that without these venues, many new talents would struggle to gain exposure and develop their careers. The album's release is intended to act as a catalyst for the scene's resurgence.

A night out in sound

The album's concept follows the progression of a typical night out, encompassing various experiences from the initial journey to the dancefloor euphoria and the journey home. Previewed through EPs titled '9PM', '12AM', and '3AM', the record features 17 tracks described as soulful rave rap and ambient drum 'n' bass. Tempah stated that he views a good night out as a rite of passage, essential for experiencing euphoria, joy, connection, and randomness.

Tempah also highlighted the financial challenges faced by artists in the current music landscape. He noted that even artists with significant streaming numbers may receive limited income after all deductions, making the experience of performing in clubs and winning over live audiences a vital part of their development.

Personal discipline and artistic drive

In addition to his music career, Tempah has dedicated seven years to training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He began the martial art after a suggestion from actor Tom Hardy at a King's Trust event. Tempah, who holds a purple belt and competes under the name Emeka Okogwu, described the training as mentally humbling and a source of peace. He has even considered adopting the moniker 'Wonder Man'.

Tempah's debut album, 'Disc-Overy', released in 2010, achieved triple-platinum status. Reflecting on his early career, he recalled intense pressure from his major label, which once insisted he miss his grandmother's funeral to continue working. He stated he was manipulated into believing he had to seize every immediate opportunity.

He believes the pandemic significantly impacted social habits, and while acknowledging a greater focus on health, he stressed the importance of balance. Tempah is hopeful that 'The Night's Not Dead' will contribute to bringing the clubland lifestyle back to life.
