Brand 'preoccupied by sex', ex-flatmate tells court
Andrew Dobson described Russell Brand as 'very egotistical' and 'erratic' during their time together in the late 1990s.
Andrew Dobson, who shared accommodation with Russell Brand in the late 1990s, told Southwark Crown Court that the comedian had a significant focus on sexual encounters. Dobson, who composed music for a theatrical troupe they were both part of, described Brand as a 'very vibrant character' who was 'very egotistical' and 'erratic'.
Mr Dobson told the court that Brand spent many evenings seeking partners for sexual relations. "I do recall clearly nights where the pursuit of ultimately getting somebody into bed would have been a preoccupation," Dobson stated, as reported by The Standard.
Allegations and Defence
Russell Brand is facing seven charges stemming from allegations made by six women. These include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault, with alleged incidents occurring between 1999 and 2009. The defence intends to argue that consensual sexual encounters have been 'reimagined' over time.
The trial heard details of an alleged rape in 1999, involving a woman Brand met after a performance at the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. Statements from two friends of this accuser were read to the court. One friend, a journalist, recounted a phone call in 2023 where the accuser revealed the alleged rape, stating Brand had acted 'monster-like'.
Another friend provided a statement detailing a WhatsApp message from December 2024, in which the accuser commented on public perception of Brand.
Brand denies all charges. As he arrived at court with his wife, Laura Gallacher, he told journalists it was an 'extraordinary and stressful situation' but also an 'exploration of truth and justice'.
