Incident → evidence → outcomeMichael Bogle, a 38-year-old man from Brent, has been sent back to prison after committing a string of offences shortly after his early release from HMP Wandsworth. Bogle was set free on 1 October as part of the government’s early release scheme, intended to reduce pressure on prison capacity.
He was identified as Michael Bogle, of Bertie Road, and was arrested for further offending in north west London. According to Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, Bogle had been serving a sentence for shoplifting and breaching a criminal behaviour order prior to his release.
Pattern of reoffending
CCTV footage reportedly showed Bogle stealing from two supermarkets in Brent. Allegations suggest he committed further shoplifting offences over the subsequent weekend. Court documents seen by This Is Local London list offences including burglaries and thefts from shops in Wembley. He was also found to have entered a Sainsbury’s store despite a ban from all such premises across the UK.
Police apprehended Bogle, leading to charges for four counts of shoplifting, breaching court orders, and commercial burglary. He appeared at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 6 October, where he pleaded guilty to the charges and was returned to custody.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams expressed concern over the early release scheme in this instance. He stated in a letter to MPs, councillors, and partners that a known prolific offender was released back into the community only to reoffend immediately. Williams noted that this situation places communities at risk and increases demand on policing resources for arrests and investigations.
The cost associated with Bogle’s arrest and investigation was detailed by DCS Williams. He reported that 27 officer hours were required, resulting in an estimated cost of £1,887. Williams added that the pressures on policing should not be transferred without recognition.
