King Charles has removed the OBE from West London businessman Nirpaul Riat. The decision follows his conviction for operating as a rogue landlord for two decades, during which he housed vulnerable people in substandard conditions. Mr Riat was previously awarded the honour in 2011 for his contributions to charity and the Punjabi community.

Decades of Exploitation and Poor Housing

In 2023, Mr Riat received a £300,000 fine, one of the largest imposed in Hounslow, after a court determined he had unlawfully converted houses into flats and rented out ancillary buildings. Tenants were forced to live with issues including damp, inadequate heating, mould, and limited natural light. These illegal conversions and rentals occurred over a 20-year period. Mr Riat had also been fined £20,000 in 2009 for similar property conversion offences in Hanworth.

The Cabinet Office stated that Mr Riat's actions had "brought the honours system into disrepute". His original OBE recognised his fundraising efforts, which generated nearly £50,000 for organisations such as air ambulance services, Thames Valley Crime Stoppers, and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Council Welcomes Consequence for Landlord

Councillor Tom Bruce, Deputy Leader of Hounslow Council, expressed satisfaction with the King's decision. He had publicly called for the OBE's rescission in 2023, stating at the time, "While these residents were left to languish in these appalling conditions, Nirpaul grew rich at their expense." Councillor Bruce reiterated the council's dedication to tenant welfare, adding, "Mr Riat allowed his tenants to live in woeful conditions while growing rich at their expense. That is why Hounslow Council pursued the case and why such a significant fine was imposed." He concluded that the revocation, coupled with the substantial fine, sends a strong message against exploiting tenants and profiting from unacceptable living conditions in Hounslow.

The council confirmed its ongoing commitment to protecting tenants and holding landlords who endanger their residents' welfare accountable.
