Chef Chris Wheeler found dead in Brompton Cemetery

Chef Chris Wheeler, 52, who was the executive chef at The Hurlingham Club and a familiar face on television programmes such as Great British Menu, was found dead in Brompton Cemetery on February 27, 2026. An inquest into his death, held on September 30, heard that he had been reported missing by his wife on February 25, 2026.

Inquest findings

Jean Harkin, Assistant Coroner at Inner West London Coroner's Court, recorded an open conclusion. This signifies that the full circumstances surrounding Mr Wheeler's death remain unclear, and it was not definitively established whether he intended to end his own life. The coroner noted that Mr Wheeler had a history of mental health issues but no prior history of self-harm. A post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death to be asphyxiation and the harmful effects of drugs, including ketamine. The coroner stated there was no evidence of drug addiction.

Police investigations concluded there was no third-person involvement in Mr Wheeler's death. No note indicating any intention to self-harm was found.

Career and family tributes

Mr Wheeler was widely recognised for his culinary talent. He appeared on Great British Menu in 2016 and also featured on Saturday Kitchen and Hell's Kitchen. His family described him as 'exceptionally talented' and 'a perfectionist' who took immense pride in his work. They highlighted his passion for both his profession and his family, stating that despite the demanding nature of his career, he always made time for his wife, Simona, and their two daughters. His family expressed that he was a 'true gentleman, the best dad and partner'.

The family statement read at the inquest also mentioned his dedication to charity, including completing the London marathon in 2006 dressed as a chef while flipping a pancake.
