Cyclist jailed after Bishopsgate knife arrest

A cyclist stopped by City of London Police for running a red light was found to be carrying a six-inch knife. Ridwan Abdilahi, 23, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article, failing to stop for police, and running a red light on a bicycle. The offences occurred on September 8.

Incident on Bishopsgate

Officers on patrol spotted Abdilahi cycling through a red traffic light on Bishopsgate at approximately 4:50pm on September 8. He was stopped and asked to move onto the pavement, at which point he attempted to flee. Following a brief struggle and assistance from an off-duty special constable, Abdilahi was detained.

When questioned about his behaviour, Abdilahi stated he was on his way to meet a female acquaintance and was experiencing issues. He also indicated he believed officers were joking when he crossed the red light.

Discovery of the weapon

Abdilahi's behaviour prompted officers to conduct a search. A six-inch knife was discovered in his coat, leading to his arrest for possession of a bladed weapon. Sergeant Sibyl Beaumont of the City of London Police's Cycle Team commented on the proactive policing that led to the arrest.

Sergeant Beaumont added that the weapon served no legitimate purpose and was capable of causing serious harm. She highlighted the importance of proactive policing and the Safer City Streets initiative, which targets lower-level offending to identify offenders and remove weapons from the streets.

Remand and sentencing

Abdilahi has been remanded in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
