Alleged crime gang leader Daniel Kinahan, 49, has been formally charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation. The appearance took place before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday.

The charges relate to a period between October 18 2015 and April 6 2017. Mr Kinahan, who was wearing a grey suit, black shirt, and glasses, did not speak during the brief court hearing, as reported by The Standard.

Extradition and Arrest

Mr Kinahan was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on April 15, following an arrest warrant issued by Irish courts. This action was taken under a bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the UAE. He was transported to Ireland in August on an Irish Government jet and subsequently taken to court in Dublin under a high-speed Garda escort to face the charges.

Bail Application and Next Steps

Darragh Mackin, from Phoenix Law in Belfast, has formally entered his appearance as Mr Kinahan’s solicitor. Mr Mackin informed the court that papers would be lodged and a bail application would be made in due course, to be heard through the High Court. He also indicated that the trial timetable would need to account for expert examination of digital evidence and disclosure requests related to two other investigations in Spain and Dubai, from which Mr Kinahan had previously been acquitted. Prosecution barrister Dominic McGinn SC noted the complex factual nature of the charge, with a statement of facts extending to 189 pages.

Mr Kinahan was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 21.
