Golders Green stabbing: No terror link, but hate crime charge

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to establish a terrorist connection in the double stabbing incident that occurred in Golders Green on April 29, 2026. Essa Suleiman, aged 45, is accused of targeting Shloime Rand, 34, and Norman Shrine, 76, in the attack.

Counter Terrorism Policing had initially investigated the incident as a suspected antisemitic and terrorism-related attack. However, a hearing on Friday, September 25, was informed of the CPS's conclusion that the evidence did not support a terrorist motive.

Despite the lack of a terrorism link, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the CPS is satisfied the defendant's actions amounted to hate crimes. This will be presented as an aggravating factor for the court's consideration during sentencing.

Further Charges and Victim Impact

Suleiman also pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of attempted murder of Ishmail Hussein, which occurred in Southwark. He further denied possessing a knife in a public space. Both men attacked in Golders Green were taken to hospital and were reported to be in a stable condition.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, acknowledged the significant impact of the incident on the victims and the wider Jewish community. She referenced recent arson attacks on synagogues in north west London and arrests in Manchester related to a suspected plot targeting the Jewish community.

Commander Flanagan stated that Counter Terrorism Policing continues to collaborate with the Metropolitan Police to enhance visibility and security for Jewish communities across London.
