Kieran Hayler rape trial: Jury told to treat Katie Price evidence cautiously
Prosecutor Ryan Richter advised jurors to be wary of evidence from celebrity Katie Price during closing arguments.
Jurors at Lewes Crown Court have been advised to approach evidence from Katie Price with caution during the trial of her ex-husband, Kieran Hayler. Mr Hayler faces three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, with the alleged offences occurring in West Sussex in 2016.
Prosecution's advice to the jury
In his closing speech on Monday, prosecutor Ryan Richter told the jury they had witnessed the “whirlwind” of Katie Price and would need to assess how her presence affected the case. Mr Richter stated that the prosecution accepted the jury was likely to treat Ms Price's evidence with caution. He suggested that up to 90% of her evidence might be irrelevant and advised jurors to concentrate on what was pertinent to assessing her statements. Mr Richter also urged the jury to look beyond the "big egos" and "big personalities" involved, and to consider whether their influence might overshadow the complainant's voice.
He questioned the complainant's motivation for coming to court to give what he termed a "pack of lies", and specifically referenced a message from Ms Price to the complainant in 2017 stating "I will make you a little star". Mr Richter asked if this message was central to the case and whether it suggested Ms Price had been waiting nine years to fulfil this promise.
Defence's arguments
Representing Mr Hayler, defence barrister Arlette Piercy told the jury that her client had been consistent and clear in his defence throughout the trial, describing the proceedings as a "rollercoaster ride". She urged the jury to remain calm and rational, warning that "emotion is enemy of reason". Ms Piercy acknowledged that Mr Hayler and Ms Price had been in a "toxic, co-dependent relationship" over several years, marked by infidelity, substance abuse, and public scrutiny.
Ms Piercy highlighted inconsistencies in the complainant's evidence, noting that she had stated she did not know or could not remember on more than 30 occasions. The defence submitted that this lack of a coherent account was a significant factor supporting their position and undermining the witness's overall credibility. Mr Hayler denies all charges and has stated that the allegations constitute a "smear campaign to ruin me" by Ms Price.
The trial continues.
