Man charged with assisting Russian intelligence

Joshua Cammidge, a 31-year-old British national, has been formally charged under the National Security Act. Counter Terrorism Policing London officers arrested Cammidge at an address in Swindon on Friday. He was subsequently taken to a London police station.

Allegations and Charges

The charges relate to allegations that Cammidge received instructions from an individual believed to be connected to the GRU Volunteer Corps, a group associated with Russia's military intelligence agency. He faces two charges: assisting a foreign intelligence service, contrary to Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, and preparatory conduct, contrary to Section 18 of the same act. Searches were conducted at a separate address in Swindon following his arrest.

Cammidge was further arrested and detained under the National Security Act on Saturday. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday for his first hearing.

Prosecution Statement

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated that its prosecutors have determined there is sufficient evidence to proceed with criminal proceedings. Frank Ferguson, chief crown prosecutor for the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, confirmed the decision. He also issued a reminder that legal proceedings are active and that the defendant is entitled to a fair trial, urging against any reporting or online commentary that could prejudice the case.

Government Response

Security Minister Dan Jarvis acknowledged the police action, stating it addressed a potential threat. He thanked the police for their work in ensuring public safety. While declining to comment on the specifics of the case, Mr Jarvis noted public concern over recent incidents in Europe aimed at sowing fear and disrupting support for Ukraine, asserting that such attempts would not succeed.
