Man jailed for stabbing neighbour with ruler
Victim and neighbours fled their homes fearing for their safety after the attack.
David Anthony has been sentenced to six months imprisonment after stabbing his neighbour Liam Mitchell with a sharpened metal ruler. The attack occurred on 24 August 2025 when Mitchell, 37, answered a knock at his door. He sustained injuries to his face and stomach.
Following the incident, Mitchell and other residents reported feeling unsafe in their building and have since moved out. Mitchell stated he believed he was going to be killed during the assault. He managed to restrain Anthony until police arrived.
Court proceedings and sentence
David Anthony was convicted of possession of an offensive weapon at Southwark Crown Court on 30 March 2026. Despite the conviction and sentence, he was permitted to return to his flat. This has led to further distress for residents who had already left.
Liam Mitchell expressed that he does not feel justice has been served, citing a significant scar on his face and the loss of his home. He and other families have been unable to secure permanent accommodation since leaving the property.
Housing association response
A spokesperson for West Kent Housing Association acknowledged the distressing nature of the experience. The association stated they have sought to support Mr Mitchell and are committed to ensuring residents feel safe. They confirmed that Mr Mitchell is no longer a tenant and that they did not restrict him from returning to his home.
Franki Barker, another resident, described the period after the attack as feeling like they "couldn't breathe" due to fear. She indicated that the lack of permanent housing solutions from the housing association has prolonged their displacement.
