MP demands answers on US diplomat's exit

Fleur Anderson, the Member of Parliament for Putney, has demanded answers regarding an American diplomat accused of possessing indecent images of children. The diplomat, attached to the US embassy in London, was reportedly flown back to the United States by American authorities after allegations surfaced concerning child abuse material found on his phone.

Allegations and Diplomat's Departure

Reports indicate that on August 25, American authorities obtained a court order in the US before raiding the diplomat's residence in Putney. He was allegedly seized along with his mobile phone and taken to an RAF base used by US forces for transport. British police were reportedly not informed of the raid or the diplomat's removal until after he had left the country. The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Tuesday August 25 that US authorities had informed them of an investigation into suspected offences in London relating to indecent images of children.

Sources suggest that American officers, who do not possess arrest powers in Britain, did not make a formal extradition request. The situation has led to concerns that the incident could represent a cover-up, with calls for the diplomat to face trial in an English court if offences were committed in the UK.

Calls for Accountability

Ms Anderson stated that the incident, which occurred within her constituency, has implications extending beyond Putney. She emphasised that the relationship between Britain and the United States must be founded on mutual respect for the rule of law. "No one should be above the law," Ms Anderson said. "Diplomatic privileges exist for a purpose; they should never be used to prevent accountability. The public deserve to know how this diplomat, who was accused of particularly repugnant offences, was allowed to leave the country without being properly investigated."

A government spokesperson commented that they expect all foreign diplomats in the UK to abide by British laws, mirroring expectations for UK diplomats serving abroad. The spokesperson stated that further comment would be inappropriate while a US investigation is ongoing.

US Embassy Response

A spokesman for the US embassy confirmed awareness of the allegations concerning an individual assigned to the embassy. "The United States government expects all personnel to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, and we take these allegations seriously," the spokesman said. "While we can’t comment on the specifics of the case, we quickly informed UK law enforcement and took swift action, and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners regarding these allegations. The individual in question has been reassigned to the United States in conjunction with an ongoing investigation. The Embassy has informed British authorities of the case."

The Metropolitan Police stated they continue to liaise with US authorities regarding the matter.
