The undercover report uncovered remarks by various Reform UK representatives and candidates across the country, including offensive and inflammatory comments.
Comments on Strategy and Secrecy
Footage broadcast by ITV showed Councillor David Kerr suggesting that political parties must appear "palatable" to the electorate to achieve power. He was heard saying, "We're not f****** stupid enough to p*** off the entire woke south or centrist south really of the country." Councillor Adam Parkins was filmed stating, "The stuff that people feel uncomfortable with, don't even announce it, just do it." He added, "We just need to get f****** elected, that's all that really matters."
Neither Councillor Parkins nor Councillor Kerr has issued a public response to the comments attributed to them. The Local Democracy Reporting Service also attempted to contact both councillors for comment but had not received a reply. They remain listed as Reform UK councillors on the Hounslow authority.
Party Response and Council Leader's Reaction
A spokesperson for Reform UK stated that investigations have commenced for members, activists, and councillors who have "clearly behaved inappropriately." The party confirmed that some individuals have been suspended, and due process is being followed. The spokesperson added that Reform UK has improved its vetting procedures but acknowledged that a small number of individuals might initially pass vetting before making future comments, particularly when "entrapped in a discussion with an undercover reporter."
Hounslow's Labour council leader, Shantanu Rajawat, described some of the national comments uncovered by the investigation as "shocking and disgraceful." He highlighted Hounslow's "proud history of tolerance and community" where residents are encouraged to "look out for, care for, and respect one another."
Opposition parties within Hounslow council also voiced criticism. The Green group leader, Guy Lambert, expressed shock and suggested residents would be concerned by the views aired. The leader of Hounslow's Conservative group labelled the comments as revealing an "abhorrent" aspect of the party, potentially diverting attention from voter concerns such as crime and business support. Liberal Democrat councillor Roger Crouch commented that the investigation exposed a "dangerous and unacceptable side to Reform UK," implying residents would be justified in questioning their elected representatives' true beliefs.
