Sidcup martial arts teacher jailed for 25 years for child abuse

Tony Swanson, founder of the Taoist Arts Organisation (TAO), has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually abusing a pupil. The 75-year-old was found guilty of 15 child sex offences, including four counts of rape, at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, August 28.

The abuse, which took place over approximately three years in the mid-2000s, involved the victim's mother, who admitted three counts of sexual activity in the presence of a child. She will be sentenced separately. Police stated they believe Swanson may have other victims, as he taught children in the Beckenham and Sidcup areas.

Abuse and Grooming

Swanson, who founded the TAO in 1995, met the child at classes he ran at a church hall in Beckenham. The court heard that Swanson groomed the girl while he was in a relationship with her mother. He was convicted of four counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault, three counts of sexual activity with a child, three counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

During the trial, prosecutor James Brown KC told the jury that the mother became involved in the sexual abuse and began having sex with Swanson. He then groomed her daughter, telling her he was well-placed to teach her about sex, before sexually abusing and repeatedly raping her. Swanson convinced the mother that he was a safe person to teach her daughter about sex.

In a statement read to the court, the victim described the abuse as traumatic, stating it took away her teenage years, innocence, and virginity. She expressed self-hatred and fear of bringing children into the world. The victim stated Swanson continued to abuse her by pleading not guilty and showing no remorse, prolonging her recovery.

Police Investigation and Sentencing

The victim confided in friends and family over the years, but did not give her account to the police until 2022. Detective Constable Leonora Simpson of the Met Police stated that Swanson is an "evil predator" who took advantage of the situation. The court heard that the abuse stopped when the victim told her mother she could not continue. Swanson responded by confronting the victim, telling her she had made the wrong decision and would never be happy.

Ed Butler KC, mitigating for Swanson, acknowledged that the jury's verdicts would lead to little sympathy. However, he asked the judge not to lose sight of the substantial evidence that Swanson had positively influenced many young people over the years through his martial arts organisation. Judge Christopher Grout concluded that Swanson had abused his position of power within the TAO to carry out the abuse. Swanson will not be eligible for parole for at least 16 years.
