Thief wanted after stealing phone from vulnerable man near Liverpool Street

City of London Police are appealing for the public's help to find a man wanted in connection with a theft near Liverpool Street station. Paul Langan, 58, stole a mobile phone from a vulnerable individual who was being monitored by police control room staff. The incident occurred around 7pm on Friday, April 24.

CCTV leads to arrest

CCTV footage captured Langan approaching the victim, who appeared to be sleeping on steps close to the station, and taking his phone. The advanced camera network allowed officers to track Langan's movements, leading to his arrest. The victim was assisted and his phone was returned.

Langan, who resides on Old Montague Street in Tower Hamlets, subsequently pleaded guilty to one count of theft from a person. However, he failed to attend court for his sentencing hearing. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest.

Police Constable Sachin Kumar stated that the City of London Police's sophisticated CCTV system was instrumental in the case. "If it hadn’t been for our cameras and the quick thinking of control room staff, it’s likely that Langan might have got away with his crimes," PC Kumar said. He described Langan as a "brazen and opportunistic thief" who stole from someone in a vulnerable state.

Police are urging anyone with information about Paul Langan's whereabouts to contact the City of London Police directly by calling 101. Alternatively, individuals can provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers by dialling 0800 555 111.
