TV chef Chris Wheeler was found dead in Brompton Cemetery on 27 February 2026, an inquest has heard. Mr Wheeler, who was a familiar face on BBC programmes Great British Menu and Saturday Kitchen, was discovered by a groundsman in the Kensington and Chelsea cemetery. His wife had reported him missing two days prior to the discovery.

Cause of Death and Inquest Findings

The Inner West London Coroner’s Court heard that the cause of Mr Wheeler’s death was asphyxiation and a harmful mix of drugs, which included methamphetamine, amphetamine, and ketamine. Pathologist Dr John Firth noted in his report that while the drug levels were not considered fatal, they were contributory to his death. There were no signs of injury or struggle, and CCTV footage confirmed Mr Wheeler entered the cemetery alone. The court was told he had a history of mental health problems, but there was no note indicating self-harm and no history of self-harm. The Assistant Coroner, Jean Harkin, stated that it was not clear whether he intended to take his own life, leading to an open verdict. The inquest also heard there was no evidence of drug addiction.

Family statements read out in court described Mr Wheeler as an "exceptionally talented chef" who took immense pride in his work and achieved a great deal during his career. Despite long hours, he always made time for his family. His daughters remembered him as a "truly sunny soul".

Career Highlights

Mr Wheeler gained prominence after competing in the 2016 series of Great British Menu. He trained under chef Jean-Christophe Novelli for a decade, becoming the youngest sous chef in a Michelin-starred restaurant. His most recent role was as executive chef at the Hurlingham club in Fulham. Tributes from former colleagues at Stoke Park, where he previously worked, highlighted his culinary skills and his impact on guests.
