Wanstead man jailed for 20 years for Brighton kidnapping and rape

Ruckling Ramsay, 61, from Wanstead, London, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for kidnapping and raping a 19-year-old woman in Brighton in 2022. He was found guilty of all counts at Inner London Crown Court on May 21, 2026, and received an additional three years and six months extended licence.

Details of the incident

Ramsay targeted the 19-year-old woman in Brighton city centre. After picking her up, he pressured her to ingest a substance before subjecting her to multiple rapes and sexual assaults. He drove the victim around various locations, including areas near Shroehamd Power Station and the South Downs. The victim managed to text a friend around 9.30am, who tracked her location and assisted in her escape.

Sussex Police identified Ramsay through his vehicle's registration number after the victim reported the incident. Phone location data placed him in Brighton city centre at the time of the offences. He was subsequently charged with multiple offences, including rape, kidnap, and sexual assault by penetration, relating to both Sussex and Metropolitan Police investigations.

Police response and appeal

Metropolitan Police Detective Constable Kieran Mulvaney highlighted the victim's courage, stating it was central to securing the conviction. He added that the outcome reflected the officers' determination to pursue justice and encouraged anyone who has experienced sexual violence to report it, assuring them they would be listened to and supported.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Cobbet indicated that there may be more women who have been targeted by Ramsay. He urged any potential victims to come forward to ensure they receive justice. Ramsay is now serving his sentence.
