Westlife singer sues surgeon over weight-loss operation complications

Westlife singer Mark Feehily has initiated legal action against surgeon Nick Carter, alleging that a weight-loss operation performed in August 2020 led to severe health complications. Feehily claims the procedure caused recurring sepsis, which ultimately required him to have his entire stomach removed in 2023.

Allegations of Negligence

According to reports, Feehily underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a weight-loss surgery, in August 2020. The singer's legal team, Leigh Day Solicitors, has filed a medical negligence claim at the High Court. They allege that Mr Carter, a bariatric surgeon, did not remove enough of Feehily's stomach during the operation. This, they claim, led to a leak, severe abdominal infections, and recurrent sepsis.

The complications from the initial surgery persisted, leading to hospital admissions until Feehily underwent a full gastrectomy in 2023 to have his entire stomach removed. Feehily, aged 46, has previously spoken publicly about his health issues, which led to a hiatus from the band in 2024.

Surgeon's Response

Leigh Day partner Suzanne White confirmed they are representing the singer in the claim against Mr Nick Carter. While Feehily has been keeping fans updated on his health challenges, he will not be commenting further due to the ongoing court process. Mr Carter has been contacted for comment and, as reported by The Times, denies negligence.

Feehily had previously withdrawn from concerts in 2022 due to pneumonia and announced his stepping back from Westlife in February 2024 before the group's current world tour.
