Hospital attendances before death
In the weeks leading up to her death, Ms Simpson attended hospital on three occasions over a 12-day period. She first presented at Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington on 6 October 2022, reporting bleeding and fluid loss. She was diagnosed with pre-labour rupture of membranes. Two days later, on 8 October, she attended King's College Hospital with further bleeding and was admitted for five days. She was discharged on 13 October with plans for a Caesarean section at 35 weeks.
Four days after her discharge, Ms Simpson returned to King's College Hospital experiencing abdominal pain and further fluid loss. Initially, a Category 2 C-section was planned, but this was escalated to an emergency Category 1 procedure. As medical staff prepared for surgery, Ms Simpson suffered a cardiac arrest. Her baby daughter was delivered in the early hours of 18 October, but Ms Simpson died later that morning.
Family seeks answers
Ms Simpson's parents, including her mother Michelle Simpson, are seeking clarity on the care their daughter received. Michelle Simpson stated that becoming a mother was a long-held dream for Yaszmin, and the event turned a joyous occasion into one of loss. The family has instructed specialist medical negligence lawyers to assist them in obtaining answers and understanding the events.
“While nothing can change what happened, the inquest represents an important opportunity to establish the facts and help the family gain a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding Yaszmin's death and whether there are lessons to be learned to improve patient safety and help prevent other families from experiencing a similar loss.”
Charlotte Johnson, the lawyer representing the family, commented that the inquest is a significant opportunity to establish facts and provide the family with a better understanding of the circumstances. She added that the process could help identify lessons to improve patient safety. Ms Simpson, who was weeks away from her 30th birthday, also had a career as a recruitment consultant and a personalised design business.
