Trading Standards officers, working alongside the Metropolitan Police, inspected 14 retail locations in Hounslow. The operation, conducted on 14 March, resulted in contraband being discovered in 10 of these establishments.

Seized Goods

Among the confiscated items were unregulated erectile dysfunction treatments, including Kamagra Oral Jelly and Sildamax Sildenafil tablets. These medicines, manufactured in India, are not approved for sale in the UK and carry potential health risks due to unknown contents and side effects. The operation also yielded over 20,000 illicit cigarettes, 440 pouches of hand-rolling tobacco, 813 packets of oral tobacco products, 445 vapes, and 492 packets of other medicines.

Links to Organised Crime

Hounslow Council highlighted that the distribution of counterfeit tobacco is frequently associated with organised criminal enterprises, which may also be involved in human trafficking, drug dealing, and illegal immigration. The council also noted that these illicit goods are often produced in unsanitary conditions and sold at prices significantly lower than legitimate products.

Councillor Amy Croft, who is the cabinet member for enforcement, stated that the sale of illegal tobacco, unregulated vapes, counterfeit items, and unsafe medicines endangers consumers. She added that such activities undermine legitimate businesses operating within the law. Councillor Croft issued a clear message to those involved in illicit trade, stating that enforcement action would continue.

Members of the public who suspect the sale of illegal tobacco, counterfeit goods, or unsafe products can report their concerns via email or anonymously through Citizens Advice. Inquiries into the discoveries made during the inspections are ongoing, and arrests were made during the operation.
