Fourteen shops across West London were raided on September 1 as part of a joint operation by Hounslow Council's Trading Standards officers and the Metropolitan Police. The coordinated visits uncovered a significant quantity of illicit products, including cigarettes, vapes, and medicines.

Seized Items

The raids resulted in the seizure of 1,019 packets of illicit cigarettes, which equates to more than 20,000 individual cigarettes. Also confiscated were 440 pouches of hand rolling tobacco, 813 packets of oral tobacco products, 445 vapes, and 27 pouches of shisha tobacco. A total of 492 packets and sachets of medicines were also found.

Illegal Medications and Organised Crime Links

Among the seized medicines were illegal erectile dysfunction medications, including Kamagra Oral Jelly and Sildamax Sidenafil tablets. These products, often manufactured in India, are not approved for sale in the EU or the UK and carry potential health risks due to a lack of information on their ingredients and side effects. The Metropolitan Police also seized a number of controlled substances and made arrests during the operation, with investigations ongoing.

Trading Standards stated that the supply of illegal tobacco is frequently associated with organised crime, including links to drug trafficking and people trafficking. Unregulated tobacco and vape products can fail to meet safety standards and may be produced in unhygienic conditions, posing risks to consumers. These items are typically sold at lower prices than legitimate, regulated versions.

Council Response

Councillor Amy Croft, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Enforcement and Recycling at Hounslow Council, commented on the operation. She stated that the sale of illicit tobacco, unregulated vapes, counterfeit products, and unsafe medicines endangers consumers and disadvantages businesses operating legally. Councillor Croft sent a clear message to those involved in such activities, stating the council's commitment to pursuing and disrupting this behaviour.

Reporting Concerns

Hounslow Council is encouraging residents to report any concerns they have regarding the sale of illicit tobacco, illegal vapes, counterfeit goods, or other unsafe products. Reports can be made via email to tradingstandards@hounslow.gov.uk or anonymously through Citizens Advice.
