The company's illegal activity escalated beyond standpipe use. Select Piling Ltd excavated the public highway to create a direct, unauthorised connection to the clean water main. Thames Water stated that its efforts to identify and stop such connections are vital to prevent significant water loss and maintain the integrity of the clean water network.

Thames Water's dedicated team tackling illegal connections has brought 32 prosecutions this year, covering a total of 61 offences. These actions have resulted in fines and legal costs amounting to £137,338.22. The water company reserves the right to prosecute all such offences but may offer a one-time retrospective charge for a first-time, non-aggravated standpipe offence.
Other recent convictions include Thames Street Works Ltd, which was fined £3,527 in Bexley for a comparable offence. In Tower Hamlets, Advanced Drains Ltd received a £3,743 fine for an illegal connection. Graduate Landscapes was fined £1,000 for an unauthorised standpipe connection in Wantage, and Excel Drainage Ltd was fined £3,573 in Vale of White Horse.
