Sutton and Croydon car thefts see 1.3% charge rate

A mere 1.3% of vehicle thefts in Sutton and Croydon between July 2025 and July 2026 resulted in a charge or conviction, new Metropolitan Police figures show. Across the two boroughs, 2,270 vehicle thefts were reported, with only 30 cases leading to a positive outcome such as an offender being charged.

Resident experiences highlight concerns

Sutton resident Khuram Ijaz, who owns a restaurant, described his frustration after his family had two cars stolen from their driveway within a year. The first vehicle, a Mercedes GLA, was taken after thieves entered the home and stole keys. Around a year later, a BMW X3 was stolen while the family slept. While insurance covered the vehicles, some personal belongings were not recovered. Mr Ijaz told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that police attended after the initial theft but found no fingerprints, and he received no further updates on the investigation. He believes more police presence and stricter laws are needed.

Another Sutton resident, Jill Whitehead, reported her hybrid Toyota stolen from her front drive. She stated that the case was closed by police approximately two hours after she reported it. Ms Whitehead expressed concern that such rapid closures could prevent the police from identifying links between cases, especially if a gang was involved in hacking key fobs, as she suspected.

Borough statistics and political reaction

Croydon recorded 1,798 vehicle theft offences during the July 2025 to July 2026 period, making it the borough with the highest number of car thefts in London. Sutton recorded significantly fewer offences, ranking 30th in London for car crime. Despite Sutton's lower ranking, Bobby Dean, the Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington, described the low rate of positive outcomes as an "appalling record". He warned that this situation could signal to criminals that car theft in London is "effectively decriminalised".

Mr Dean added that each unresolved theft represents an injustice to victims and that people expect police to investigate and bring offenders to justice. He called for a restoration of community policing, citing that police teams have been overstretched and underfunded.

Metropolitan Police response

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police acknowledged the significant impact of car theft on victims, encompassing financial loss and inconvenience. The force stated that targeted patrols in known hotspots across South London and intelligence-led operations to identify repeat offenders are ongoing. The Met also reported a 21% decrease in vehicle theft across London since April 2025. They encourage the public to report thefts as soon as possible to maximise recovery opportunities and apprehend those responsible.
