£56m car delivery compensation approved by UK court
Consumers and businesses who bought or leased new cars and vans between 2006 and 2015 can now claim.
Millions of UK consumers and businesses are set to receive a share of £56 million after a court approved a plan to distribute compensation for inflated new car delivery charges. The funds are designated for those who purchased or leased new cars and vans from 37 different brands between October 18, 2006, and September 6, 2015.
The case originated from a European Commission decision in 2018, which fined shipping companies a total of 395 million euros (£340 million) for engaging in price-fixing activities related to vehicle transport. The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has now sanctioned the distribution of approximately £55.87 million of this settlement.
Eligibility and Payouts
Consumers and businesses that acquired vehicles from manufacturers including Ford, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Peugeot, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota, Citroen, Renault, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia within the specified period are eligible. Individual payouts will start at £25 for the first vehicle. For subsequent vehicles, an additional £5 will be paid for vehicles two through six, with at least £2.50 for each additional eligible vehicle.
Businesses that bought new vehicles for their own operational use, such as car rental, delivery, construction, and fleet management companies, are also entitled to compensation. Furthermore, government institutions, including local authorities across the UK that purchased or leased vehicles during the affected timeframe, are eligible to claim.
An estimated 17.8 million vehicles in the UK were impacted by these overcharges, as approximately 80% of new vehicles are shipped into the country from overseas. Former Which? consumer expert Mark McLaren encouraged those affected to sign up promptly to ensure they are among the first to receive their compensation.
Mr McLaren stated, "Signing up now is the best way to be first in line for compensation. With everything now fully approved, the distribution of settlement monies can be distributed later this year." He added that the process has been made as straightforward as possible for claimants.
How to Register
Individuals and businesses who purchased or leased a new vehicle in the UK between October 18, 2006, and September 6, 2015, are invited to register their claim. Registration can be completed online at www.cardeliverycharges.com/register. Payouts are expected to be distributed later this year and can be received via direct banking, Nectar points, or charitable donations.
