Incident → evidence → outcomeDantay Roche, 24, has pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of Marie Theobald, 48, and her two dogs, Riley and Honey, in Ilford on December 22, 2023. The collision occurred as Ms Theobald was crossing Manford Way with her pets. Roche admitted causing death by dangerous driving, criminal damage, and causing death by driving an uninsured vehicle during a hearing at the Old Bailey.
At the time of the incident, Roche was driving his Seat Leon at approximately 61mph in a 30mph zone. CCTV footage showed Roche abandoning his vehicle after the collision and leaving the scene. He surrendered himself to officers at Ilford police station the day after the incident.
Detective Inspector Mark Braithwaite, who led the Metropolitan Police investigation, stated that Roche had not provided an explanation for his driving. "He drove dangerously fast at twice the speed limit on a busy road in a residential area, then took the cowardly decision to leave the scene after striking Marie and her two dogs," DI Braithwaite said, as reported by MyLondon. The police investigation used forensic collision investigator evidence and digital enquiries to establish Roche's speed and presence in the area.
Ms Theobald's family described her as a "loving mother, daughter, sister, niece and friend" who was "honest, hardworking, selfless" and always put others first. They also stated that her dogs, Riley and Honey, were "much loved members of the family" and adored her. The family expressed their hope that they would "all rest in perfect peace together."
Roche was remanded in custody following his guilty plea and is scheduled to be sentenced in January. The exact date for the sentencing hearing has not yet been confirmed.
