Farage: MPs face unprecedented threat
Reform UK leader cites "deep intolerance" in public debate following Sir David Amess murder.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has stated that Members of Parliament are currently facing greater threats than at any point in history. His remarks were made on the fifth anniversary of the murder of Conservative MP Sir David Amess.
Sir David Amess was fatally stabbed by Ali Harbi Ali at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, on October 15, 2021. Ali Harbi Ali was convicted in 2022 of murder and preparing terrorist acts, receiving a whole life sentence. His case had previously been closed by the Prevent anti-radicalisation scheme in 2016.
Concerns over public debate
Speaking during a visit to Chelmsford, Essex, Mr Farage described Sir David’s murder as a "huge shock to everybody", noting his popularity and dedication to public service. Mr Farage expressed concern that a "deep intolerance" has entered public discourse, leading to "thuggery, intimidation, violence and even terrorism".
He stated that his primary worry is that such an environment will deter suitable individuals from entering public service. When asked about his own safety, Mr Farage responded that he has not felt safe for over a decade and has frequently been refused assistance from the state.
