Home Office records 781 migrant arrivals in single day

The Home Office recorded 781 migrant arrivals in 10 boats on Wednesday, marking the highest number of arrivals for a single day so far this year. This surge follows two instances of boats landing undetected on British shores within the preceding two days.

Yearly Totals Show Decline

The provisional total for Channel crossings for the year to date has reached 18,565. This figure represents a 42% decrease compared to the same period last year, when 32,188 arrivals were recorded. The current total is also 26% lower than at this stage in 2024.

Review Ordered After Undetected Landings

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered an urgent review by the Border Security Command to investigate the failure to intercept two boats. The first undetected landing occurred at Samphire Hoe in Dover, followed by another dinghy reaching Folkestone on Monday morning. Ms Mahmood stated that even one uncontrolled landing is unacceptable and that the review will examine measures to prevent future occurrences.

Education Secretary Lucy Powell acknowledged the concern, stating that "you can’t stop everything all of the time." She added that the situation is being addressed through constant effort by border forces and security services, in conjunction with international partnerships. Ms Powell also indicated that the overall picture is improving, despite ongoing issues that require tackling.

Political Reactions

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp criticised the government's approach, stating that the only way to stop crossings is to deport all illegal immigrants on arrival. Conservative frontbencher Helen Whately accused the government of being "incredibly weak on illegal immigration" and failing to stop the boats. Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Max Wilkinson suggested that adopting EU migration pact proposals would address root causes and reduce risks.
