Iranian-UK national arrested in Westminster over RAF base plot
Counter-terrorism police are investigating potential foreign state involvement in an alleged plot targeting RAF Fairford.
A 27-year-old Iranian-UK dual national has been arrested in Westminster on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts. The arrest by counter-terrorism police is linked to an alleged plot to target RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The base is used by US planes for bombing missions.
The man was detained under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged plot. Searches were carried out at two properties following the arrest.
Further Questioning and Ongoing Investigation
A second individual, a 26-year-old UK national, has been questioned under caution as part of the inquiry. Counter-Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation and is considering the possibility of foreign state involvement. Vicki Evans, Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, stated that the investigation is complex and specialist teams are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry. She added that all possible angles are being examined, including potential foreign state involvement, and thanked the public for their support and patience.
This latest arrest follows an earlier detention of five men, all in their 20s and from London, on September 27. These five individuals remain on police bail while the investigation continues.
