Jeremy Corbyn's party eyes London Mayor 2028 election
Your Party is planning talks with the Green Party and independent groups over election strategy.
Incident → evidence → outcomeJeremy Corbyn's newly formed political group, 'Your Party', is contemplating putting forward a candidate for the 2028 London Mayoral election. The former Labour leader, who now heads the party established last year, stated that discussions will occur with the Green Party and various independent organisations across the capital regarding the strategy for the election, which is approximately 18 months away. This move could potentially place Corbyn's party in opposition to the incumbent Mayor.
Election Strategy Discussions
Mr Corbyn indicated that progressive parties will take time in the coming months to determine the most effective approach for the City Hall race. "We'll be in discussion with the Greens, with the various independent groups around London," Mr Corbyn told MyLondon's podcast, The London Brief. He noted that Your Party collaborated closely with independent groups in several boroughs, including Enfield, Redbridge, and Newham, during this year's local elections. These collaborations are expected to inform their approach to the Mayoral contest.
Party Growth and Candidate Selection
Your Party candidates participated in five wards across four London boroughs in the recent local elections, but none were successful. Despite this, Mr Corbyn reported steady growth for Your Party within London, with plans to establish branches in 20 boroughs, representing two-thirds of the city. The party currently has around 80 branches nationwide, focusing on locally open campaigning and community involvement. Reform UK has already announced Laila Cunningham as their candidate for the 2028 Mayoral election, while the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are anticipated to select their nominees by early 2027. The Labour Party's selection process to find a successor to the current Mayor, should he not seek re-election, is expected to conclude by spring.
Khalid Sadur, the Your Party branch officer for Enfield, emphasised the importance of building the party from the grassroots. He stated, "We're still a new party - it takes a lot of effort and time to build up the infrastructure." Mr Sadur added that the party aims for community integration and active participation in local issues, which he believes will drive their efforts towards the 2028 election. He expressed a desire to see a Your Party candidate available for voters in 2028.
Previously, in 2023, Mr Corbyn had mentioned considering a run for City Hall as an independent candidate. He also stood as an independent in his Islington North constituency during the 2024 General Election after being suspended from the Labour Party.
