Man charged after Portsmouth anti-migrant protest disorder

Del Leon Somerville, 42, of Paulsgrove, appeared before Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. He faces charges of violent disorder and assaulting a police constable in the execution of their duty. The charges stem from an anti-migrant demonstration that took place in Portsmouth city centre on the same day.

Police Warnings and Presence

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary had issued warnings that protesters wearing face coverings could be arrested under powers in the Crime and Policing Act. A significant police presence was visible in the city centre as demonstrators assembled for a march. Anti-migrant protesters, some wearing clothing branded with 'Portsmouth Patriot', gathered outside All Saints Church on Commercial Road, chanting slogans such as 'stop the boats'.

Counter demonstrators, holding banners for Stand Up To Racism and Refugees Welcome, also gathered in a neighbouring car park. Signs displayed by these groups included messages such as 'RNLI are heroes, no-one is illegal', in reference to the RNLI's rescue work with small boat migrants, which has drawn criticism from some anti-migrant protesters.

Hampshire Police stated their intention to support peaceful and lawful expression of views but warned they would not tolerate actions aimed at creating fear or inciting violence. Both groups were allocated specific gathering locations under protest conditions, with non-compliance potentially leading to arrest.

Recent Incidents and Home Secretary Meeting

Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson of Hampshire Police described Somerville’s arrest as the first of an anticipated number of arrests, aiming to send a clear warning to those planning future disorder. This follows incidents last Sunday at Eastney Marina, where crowds gathered after a dinghy arrived. Official vehicles were damaged and a small number of police officers sustained injuries during that event. Approximately 200 people were dispersed early on Monday.

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, met with police on Thursday to discuss their readiness in dealing with far-right groups. The meeting followed events in Dover and Portsmouth the previous weekend. Ms Mahmood commented on scenes in Dover where masked individuals blocked road access to the port, noting the 'fear factor' and 'malign intent' communicated by such actions, and stressed the need to learn lessons.
