Police injured in anti-migrant protests at Dover and Portsmouth

Police officers were injured and vehicles were damaged during a stand-off with masked protesters in Portsmouth on Sunday. The incident occurred after crowds of masked men blocked road access to the Port of Dover on Saturday. These events followed the arrival of approximately 120 migrants in a boat near the Isle of Wight earlier on Sunday.

Official Response and Investigations

Policing minister Sarah Jones stated that demonstrators who crossed the line from peaceful protest into illegality would face the full force of the law. She attributed the frustration seen in communities to the "chaos and crisis in the years that preceded the general election of 2024." More than 200 protesters attempted to prevent coaches from taking the newly arrived migrants for processing, Ms Jones told the Commons. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary is investigating potential assaults and criminal damage stemming from the Portsmouth events, though no arrests have been made so far. The chairman of Hampshire Police Federation, Spencer Wragg, described the scenes in Portsmouth as "merely criminal behaviour of assaults, damage and intimidation," adding that officers became targets. Kent Police is investigating damage to a road following the Dover protest.

Political Reactions and Accusations

Ms Jones branded Patriot Platform, a group claiming organisation of the Dover protest, as "far-right racist." Shadow home secretary Chris Philp responded by urging the government to "get serious about the measures, leave the ECHR (European Convention on Human Rights) and deport illegal immigrants as soon as they arrive." Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Max Wilkinson questioned why police appeared unprepared for the demonstrations, asking how far-right activists were able to close Britain's busiest port without prior intelligence. Ms Jones indicated that the government is reviewing decisions taken and will learn lessons, but would not comment on specific intelligence matters.

Protester Group and Connections

Daniel Thomas, founder of Patriot Platform and an associate of right-wing activist Tommy Robinson, was identified as a leader of the Portsmouth protest. Mr Thomas was seen confronting Reform UK's Zia Yusuf, suggesting Nigel Farage needed to be "careful with his words" and accusing him of calling protesters "knuckle-draggers" at a previous rally.

Migrant Arrivals and Police Preparedness

The demonstration at Dover was described as "spontaneous" by Kent Police. Ms Jones informed MPs of a trend of migrants moving west along the French coast, a shift attributed partly to increased policing efforts by French authorities. She stated there is no evidence migrants specifically aim to land in certain areas, but rather seek to reach processing centres like Manston. Kent Police assistant chief constable Nigel Brookes confirmed that damage to a road was the only criminal offence under investigation for the Dover incident.
