Uxbridge sisters drowned off Brighton beach, police confirm

Three sisters from Uxbridge, London, have been confirmed to have died by drowning off Brighton beach. Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were recovered from the sea near Madeira Drive on May 13. Sussex Police stated on Sunday that post-mortem examinations confirmed drowning as the cause of death for all three women.

Investigation concludes

Sussex Police have concluded their investigation into the deaths, stating there is no evidence of criminality or third-party involvement. Officers reviewed hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and took witness statements from across the country. The investigation found that the women were dropped off by taxi at Madeira Drive at 10:20pm on May 12. They entered the water later, wearing everyday clothing. Chief Superintendent Adam Hays of Sussex Police said the investigation was thorough and intentionally considered concerns raised by black communities surrounding the deaths of black people in or near bodies of water. He added that the force would now support the coronial process and asked for privacy for the family.

Inquest to resume

An inquest into the deaths opened in Brighton in May. Post-mortem examinations had previously offered a provisional cause of death as yet to be ascertained. The inquest will now resume to determine the full facts of how and when the three sisters died. Ms Adetoro was brought to shore by an RNLI crew and declared dead at the scene. Christina Walters was recovered by an RNLI lifeboat, and Rebecca Walters was washed ashore. Both were also declared dead by paramedics.
