Enfield police warn of e-bike phone thefts in Enfield Town

Police in Enfield have warned residents about a series of phone thefts in Enfield Town and other parts of the borough. The Enfield Town Safer Neighbourhoods Team said the thefts have been reported in recent weeks, with many occurring at bus stops, outside stations and at pavement junctions.

A suspect has been described as riding an e-bike and usually wearing dark clothing. Officers said the individual has also been seen in a hi-vis jacket and with a face covering. The pattern suggests opportunistic thefts, with victims often distracted while using their phones in public.

Where and when the thefts are happening

Most incidents have taken place in Enfield Town, particularly around transport hubs. Bus stops along the high street and near Enfield Town station have been identified as hotspots. Pavement junctions, where pedestrians step into the road, have also been targeted, as thieves can approach quickly on an e-bike.

The Enfield Dispatch reported that the thefts have been occurring over the past month, though police have not released exact dates or a total number of incidents. Officers have not confirmed whether the thefts are linked to a single individual or a group.

What police are doing

Enfield Town Safer Neighbourhoods Team has increased patrols in the area and put up posters at bus stops to warn residents. The posters advise people to keep valuables out of sight and to remain vigilant, particularly in busy public spaces.

Police are also urging residents to record their phone’s IMEI number, a unique 15-digit code that can help identify a device if it is stolen. The number can be found on the phone’s original packaging, in the settings menu, or by dialling *#06#.

How residents can respond

Anyone with information about the thefts or the suspect is asked to contact police. Reports can be made by calling 101, submitting details online via the Metropolitan Police website, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Residents are also advised to avoid using their phones while walking in busy areas, particularly near roads. Keeping devices in a zipped bag or pocket, rather than in a loose hand or back pocket, can reduce the risk of theft.
