The resident, who was inside at the time, said they often sleep on the roof during hot weather but were not there when the fire began. They confirmed no injuries were reported.
Firefighters bring blaze under control
The London Fire Brigade used a 32-metre turntable ladder as a water tower to tackle flames from height. Crews from Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Soho, Dowgate and surrounding fire stations worked to bring the fire under control by 8:47am.
A cordon remains in place, and Hackney Road is closed in both directions between Shoreditch High Street and Cremer Street. The London Fire Brigade has urged the public to avoid the area.
