The Metropolitan Police has announced that 711 arrests were made during a concentrated month-long operation in September aimed at tackling phone snatching, robbery, and the handling of stolen goods across London. The crackdown, which targeted crime hotspots, also led to the recovery of hundreds of suspected stolen mobile phones, enabling officers to return devices to victims and disrupt criminal networks involved in their illicit trade.

Seized E-bikes and Recovered Devices

As part of the September operation, officers seized more than 110 illegally modified e-bikes. These modified vehicles have been identified as a frequent tool for thieves carrying out snatch thefts on London's streets. The operation also recovered hundreds of suspected stolen phones, with police stating their intention to return devices to their rightful owners and pursue criminal networks involved in the theft and resale of mobile phones. The Metropolitan Police stated that tackling robbery and phone theft is a key priority, with senior officers believing that reducing these offences is critical to improving public confidence and enhancing the feeling of safety for Londoners.

Declining Offence Rates

The figures from the September crackdown coincide with a reported decrease in phone theft and robbery offences across the capital. According to the Metropolitan Police, these offences fell from 81,439 in 2024 to 71,867 in 2025. Between January and August of the current year, 39,793 offences were recorded, a reduction from 49,136 in the same period last year. In August of this year, 3,963 phone theft and robbery offences were recorded, compared to 3,311 in August 2022.

Long-term Trends and Recovery Rates

However, broader statistics indicate a significant number of phones stolen in London remain unrecovered. Between 2017 and February 2024, a total of 587,498 phones were stolen across London, excluding the City of London. Of these, only 13,998 were recovered, leaving 573,500 unaccounted for. The force also reported low rates for solving these offences.
