Met Police Oppose McDonald's Late Hours Bid in Camden

The Metropolitan Police has urged Camden Council to reject an application to extend the operating hours of a McDonald's restaurant on Finchley Road. Officers have raised concerns over a significant number of criminal incidents recorded at the establishment, arguing that increased late-night access would provide more opportunities for street robbers and thieves.

Concerns Over Crime Statistics

Local police licensing officer, PC Chris Malone, reported 19 incidents recorded at the Finchley Road McDonald's during 2026. He stated that the location had previously been a "robbery hotspot," although police had taken measures to counter specific robbery tactics. PC Malone expressed concern that extending customer access until 2am would create more "potentially vulnerable targets" for criminals who could blend into crowds.

Among the incidents highlighted by PC Malone was an assault in June 2026 where an elderly man was attacked and his walking stick broken outside the restaurant. The suspect in this case is known to frequent the McDonald's. In December 2025, a pregnant staff member was reportedly subjected to a violent attack by three youths.

PC Malone noted that the venue "struggles to deal with violent crimes throughout the day and night," describing some incidents as "horrific" where staff were assaulted or threatened. The police's opposition comes despite the franchisee, Reema Mavani, proposing that shift managers and dining area staff wear body cameras between 11pm and 2am.

Previous Extensions and Historical Incidents

Camden Council had previously granted permission in June 2025 for the restaurant to remain open until 1am for customers and 2am for deliveries. This decision was made despite opposition from local residents and the Metropolitan Police at that time. The current application seeks to allow customers access until 2am.

The Finchley Road McDonald's has a history of serious incidents, including two armed robberies in the past two decades. In 2011, masked men armed with a shotgun held up the restaurant, and in 2008, a group looted the tills after entering through a fire exit while brandishing swords. Those responsible for both incidents were apprehended and sentenced.

Next Steps

Camden's licensing panel is scheduled to hear the application for extended hours on Thursday, September 17. The Metropolitan Police's formal objection is expected to be a significant factor in the panel's decision.
