PCC Colin Sutton Cancels Theatre Tour After Resident Reaction

Colin Sutton, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk and a former Metropolitan Police detective, has cancelled a 127-date theatre tour. The tour, titled 'The Makings Of A Murderer, Double Jeopardy', was scheduled to run throughout 2027 and included four London venues.

London Dates Affected

The London dates affected by Mr Sutton's decision were at The Churchill Theatre in Bromley, Richmond Theatre, Fairfield Halls in Croydon, and The Beck Theatre in Hayes. The theatre production itself, which has been touring for several years, is not cancelled, only Mr Sutton's involvement as a speaker.

Reasons for Cancellation

Mr Sutton, who was elected as Norfolk's PCC in July, initially defended his right to undertake the tour during his spare time. He had stated that he would only be unavailable for two-hour performance slots and that it would not impact his duties. However, he later informed North Norfolk District Council's scrutiny committee of his decision to abandon the tour.

According to the BBC, Mr Sutton told councillors that the reaction from some residents prompted him to reconsider. He stated, "What surprised me and what made me reflect and think again was the reaction that I got personally from a number of residents." He added, "What I don't want to do is to give the impression to anybody that I don't take this role seriously and I'm not going to do a good job on this."

In a subsequent statement, Mr Sutton confirmed his decision. He explained that he had underestimated the number of engagements promoted by his tour promoter. He added, "Upon reflection on the feedback from Norfolk residents and the time requirements for the role of the PCC, I have decided not to go ahead with the proposed tour."

Future of the PCC Role

Mr Sutton's decision comes as the role of Police and Crime Commissioner is set to be abolished in 2028. The government announced last year that the next nationwide elections for PCCs will be held in 2028, with the aim of saving at least £100 million. Mr Sutton stated he would continue to focus his energies on his duties as Norfolk's PCC.
